BOOKS

Because of the nature of an Integral approach we don’t as a starting point concentrate on any one issue or action - so no concentration on leadership or best practices or interiors or evolution or sustainability, .... but to approach a contextual understanding of a number of different perspectives. This will in time probably include many of those listed above. Unless the process is generative, morphogenetic and probably snippable, it tends just to repeat or overlay both ‘good and bad’ processes or activities from other contexts.

Each one of these issues has a different meaning dependent on the kosmic address from which it is viewed. We are not trying to make everyone ‘integral’ - which is a misunderstanding of what integral means - but are trying to help individuals to become Integral practitioners. To enable them to have a much broader and compassionate view of the issues before them and thus a much more comprehensive ‘toolkit' with which to work. And in the long term make the 'world' a healthier place at all stages.

Guides for Integrally Informed Practitioners: 1 BASIC

Paul van Schaik

This series of guides are intended for practitioners with some experience of Integral theory. Each paper can stand alone or be used with others in the series – they are not intended to be dogmatic or prescriptive but to be used as reminders of a more extensive and developed theory. They are designed to be used as part of a workshop process and as such have limited value outside this process. Used with caution, with flexibility and a light touch, the papers are a rough guide to the territory - a ‘Third Person’ map of a highly complex and inter-meshed world. Volume 1 covers basic theory – but at sufficient detail for an integral practitioner to use in the design, planning and implementation of projects or programs.

Guides for Integrally Informed Practitioners: 2 ADVANCED

Paul van Schaik

This series of guides are intended for more advanced practitioners with experience of integral theory and it’s praxis. Each paper can stand alone or be used with others in the series – they are not meant to be dogmatic or prescriptive but to be used as reminders of a more extensive and developed theory. Used with caution, with flexibility and a light touch, the papers are a rough guide to the territory a ‘Third Person’ map of a highly complex and intermeshed world. Volume 2 is more advanced and covers more detailed uses of integral theory in praxis - for an integral practitioner to use in the design, planning and implementation of projects or programs. The series will be added to as and when appropriate.

The Nature of Life: The Tibetan approach to Health and Wellbeing. A modern interpretation of an ancient system of medicine

Barbara van Schaik

THE NATURE OF LIFE is a new interpretation of the traditional teachings of Tibetan Medicine for today’s lifestyles. Tibetan Medicine rests on the 3-Humoural Theory - Earth, Fire and Air - which governs each of us. Here the subject has been updated and expanded in a way which makes it more accessible and in order to discover to which Nature (or Humour) the reader belongs, there is a Quiz. The basis of Tibetan Medicine is the 3-way approach of Diet, Lifestyle and Behaviour. Such advice was traditionally given along with the physical medicine of powders and pills. Along with these, new chapters covering such subjects as Personality, Appearance, General Health, Best/Worst Environment, Treatments and Therapies, plus Interiors/Room Scenting for each Nature have been developed based on the Author’s extensive study and research of the subject. There is a list of European medicinal herbs, which best approximate those used in Tibetan Medicine and are widely available.

the 3 Natures Guide to Diet and Lifestyle

Barbara van Schaik

THE 3 NATURES Guide to Diet & Lifestyle is a new interpretation of the traditional teachings of Tibetan Medicine for today’s world. The 3 Natures are Earth, Fire and Air. When we know which Nature is 'ours' we can tailor our life, including diet to our best advantage. In order to discover our own Nature a Quiz is included. In addition to Diet, Lifestyle and Behaviour, new chapters on Personality, Appearance, General Health, Careers, Best/Worst Environment, Treatments and Therapies, and Interiors/Room Scenting for each Nature have been developed, based on the Author’s extensive study and research of the subject. There is a list of European medicinal herbs, which best approximate those used in Tibetan Medicine and are widely available. Having an understanding of the 3 Natures will allow insight into your own response to life as well as of those around you.

The Cloud Garden

Barbara van Schaik

Bhutan - a trek to one of the high-level lakes, and a sacred mountain where unexpected developments change the lives of those involved forever. Suzanne Fisher, a research assistant at a London University, is left broken-hearted when a long-term relationship with a colleague ends. She decides on a whim to visit her cousin Julia in Thimphu. She learns that a trek to a high-altitude lake, the Lake of Blue Heaven, and the Silver Mountain, sacred to the Bhutanese, is planned. Joining them on the trek are Oliver Byrne, a controversial war correspondent to whom she takes an instant dislike, and a glamorous Westernised Rinpoche. Lucy and Dan, young people working in Bhutan, Martin and Sarah, old friends of Robert’s and John, the Rinpoche’s attendant, make up the group. The evening before departure she discovers that the sacred mountain holds a dark secret. After the first night at a monastery in the mountains strange things begin to happen. There is a dreadful event and in the aftermath come consequences which change the lives of those involved forever. The novel is set against the buildings and landscapes of the Thimphu and Paro valleys which are well-known to the author who lived in Bhutan for four years.

Antarabhava

Adriaan van Schaik

This book contains part of Adriaan van Schaik’s visual autobiography. Just as the visual representation of a tree might be confusing and alien to anyone who has never seen one, so these observations might in the same way seem strange. The paintings are close representations of experiences, encounters and descriptions of process that occur on the energetic or etheric level of life. Some of the process described can take at least a physical life time, if not more, to implement the transformations and purifications depicted. It should be noted that there is no value judgement attributed to ascending or descending aspects of evolution as found in all religions. The paintings are about process not emotion or poetry, but as we bring as much to them as they to us, poetry can be found and felt.

A Leaders Guide toThriveAbility - Full colour version

Dr Robin Lincoln Wood and the ThriveAbility Foundation team

What value does the ThriveAbility Approach add to sustainability as usual? Well, for a start, sustainability as usual is focused primarily on systemic technological, business model and infrastructure innovations, implemented mainly using systems and complexity theory approaches. In ThriveAbility we acknowledge that this is a good place to start, however, to truly transform a human activity system requires a deeper understanding of the context within which such innovations are launched and adopted. This context includes systems, plus various cultures, individual values and behaviors. The drawback to relying solely upon technology to improve our lot is that it imposes its own logic on how we behave and what we consider to be good, beautiful, true and just i.e. thriveable. The rather chaordic transition we are now in, between rational modernism (the source of the logic of the so far degenerative, exclusive Anthropocene), and the next phase of a regenerative, inclusive Anthropocene (the "Thrivocene"?), can only be successfully navigated by a much more regenerative and inclusive (even "Integral") governance and transformation framework. The ThriveAbility Framework does not prescribe a "Before" and "After" description of the human activity system we are engaged in shifting to a more thriveable state. It is flexible because it only requires decisions to be made at the specific level of the intervention concerned- for example, a city or a region. This then allows for emergence at higher and lower levels of scale- a generative, not a prescriptive approach.
